Practicing with a hand spindle is a great way to learn the fundamentals of spinning fiber. A hand spindle lets you slow down the process of drafting fiber to make yarn because you provide your own speed and tension. This workshop will use easy to spin wool roving and simple suspended spindles to introduce you to the principles of spinning. Soon you will want to take a hand spindle with you everywhere. You become part of a long tradition when you learn to use a hand spindle. The hand spindle is an ancient and efficient way to produce yarn from wool, cotton, flax, and other fibers. It’s been said that using a hand spindle is slower by the hour but faster by the day in comparison with a spinning wheel because you can use the hand spindle on the go. Whether it is suspended, supported, or grasped this simple tool has been used by the world’s cultures for thousands of years.
Materials and equipment: everything is provided by the instructor.
