Date: February 7-8, 2026
Virginia Parks, Rosengång
Time: Saturday 1-5, Sunday 9-5
Location: Blatchford Rug Cleaning Co., 7848  Silverton Ave., Suite J, San Diego
Fee: $200 members, $225 nonmembers
$25 materials fee to be paid directly to instructor

Rosengång, or rosepath, is a traditional favorite among Swedish weavers. With only four shafts and its eponymous threading order, rosengång can be woven in multiple ways to yield a dizzying array of designs and patterns. This workshop introduces weavers to the two main categories of rosengång —loose and bound—with an opportunity to try both on your warp. Loose (also called simple) rosengång is woven as a pattern weave with a ground and pattern weft. Designs are made by varying the treadling order. As both sides of the cloth are mirrored, this technique is commonly used to weave fabric for clothing and upholstery.
Bunden, or bound, rosengång is a weft-faced weave. Designs are made by changing the order of weft colors, not the treadling. Depending on your warp and weft weight, bunden rosengång is used for table runners, wall hangings, bag fabric, rugs, and more. You will learn and experiment with different treadling and weft color sequences while weaving a sampler that will serve as a record for future projects. Your sampler is an opportunity to give rosengång a whirl, freely experiment, and have fun!

As a day job, Virginia is Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of California at Irvine. At night, when all is quiet, she is at her loom, which she has converted into a drawloom to enable her to weave traditional Scandinavian textile designs.

Materials students should provide: Warped 4-shaft loom, at least two shuttles, extra bobbins, scissors,
pen or pencil, winder if you have one (not required), remaining cone or bobbin of warp yarn (to fix broken
warp ends), any small weaving tools that you can’t live without. Instructions for warping and threading to
come.

Date: March 7-8 , 2026
Polly Giacchina, Twined Vessel with Spaced Weaving
Time: Saturday 1-5, Sunday 10-4
Location: Blatchford Rug Cleaning Co., 7848 Silverton Ave., Suite J, San Diego
Fee: $200 members, $225 nonmembers

Maximum students: 10

Twining is an interlaced basketry technique.  Two weavers travel together and weave around a fixed spoke (warp).  As the weaving progresses the shape is established.

In the workshop students will: Learn the set-up of a twined vessel, create a shape with spaced twined rows, and finish the top of the weaving.
Other shapes can be woven.  Simple materials will be provided to learn the techniques.

Materials: students should provide scissors.    Optional: yarn scraps and beads

Materials Instructors will provide: All prepared weaving materials, workshop instructions, some tools.              Materials fee of $5.00 will be paid directly to the instructor.

Polly Jacobs Giacchina was introduced to weaving, basketry and textile design at San Diego State University.  She went on to work with Misti Washington of Solana Beach in casual weekly gatherings. There she embraced natural weaving materials and continued to create one-of-a-kind fiber sculptures being exhibited in galleries and museums.  She has taught nationally and internationally at conferences and guilds.

Susan Van Winkle, Sewing a Short or Long-sleeved Bias Pullover

Location: Blatchford Rug Cleaning Co., 7848 Silverton Ave., Suite J, San Diego
Fee: $200 members, $225 nonmembers

For cloth woven in plain weave or other weave structure on a rigid heddle, table loom or floor loom using any type of fiber you wish to wear.
Materials fee: Must purchase Sarah Howard’s sewing pattern GW T011 (Digital Download $15 or so, or her paper copy at $21 plus shipping from UK).

We will meet in the spring (tentatively right after the April 4 guild meeting) to discuss sizes, try on muslins of each size, discuss fabric requirements, ideas for weaving the fabric. You will need 4.5 yards of cloth finished at 11 to 14 inches wide for short-sleeved option, or 6 yards for long-sleeved option. We will meet again in May or June when you will bring the yarn you plan to use, finalize your plan to weave, wash and press your fabric. In October, we will be cutting and sewing the top.

Susan has been weaving since the 1970’s. Her current interest is in sewing and wearing garments from her handwoven fabrics. She loves teaching new weavers and looks forward to seeing more garments at our Show and Shares.

REGISTER FOR SEWING A BIAS PULLOVER

Date: November 7-8, 2026
Ou Cao, Felting a Top
Time: Saturday 1-5, Sunday 9-5
Location: Blatchford Rug Cleaning Co., 7848 Silverton Ave., Suite J, San Diego
Fee: $200 members, $225 nonmembers
$45 materials fee to be paid directly to instructor if you choose to use Ou’s materials

Join me for a two-day creative journey into the art of felt making and surface design.

Day 1: We’ll begin by drafting a simple pattern based on your own measurements. Then, you’ll learn how to lay out wool and viscose in delicate, airy layers that transform into soft, wearable felt.

Day 2: We’ll play with surface design—using dyes and leaves to create organic textures and patterns that make each piece truly one of a kind.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll head home with a beautiful, hand-felted and hand-dyed top that you designed and created yourself.

Materials students should provide: wool roving, viscose and silk fiber, wet felting sprinkler, bubble wrap, pool noodle, plastic sheet, net fabric, old bath towels and nylon stockings, reusable cloth wipes

Instructor will provide: dye, wooden foot massager, buckets, portable cooktop, cooking pot, bowls/cups, measuring tapes, oil marker, scissors, black plastic sheet

Ou Cao is a fiber artist with a background in both painting and textile art, bringing together fine art and craftsmanship in her wearable pieces. Her current work combines hand-felting and dyeing techniques to create garments that celebrate texture, color, and organic form. She is excited to share her creative process and guide participants in making their own one-of-a-kind felted tops.

Maximum Participants: 4          Skill Level:  for all skill levels
