Turning Flax into Linen
Scheduled Dates: March 21, 2026
Instructor: Susan Hector
Time: 10 am- 3 pm
Location: Om Center, 7951 University Avenue, La Mesa
Fee: $90 members, $100 nonmembers
Materials fee paid to instructor: $15
Turning what looks like dry sticks into crisp linen is a magical process. The one-day workshop
will introduce students to the special techniques required to make this happen. The workshop
will focus on spinning flax top or roving, which is generally available for purchase; a small amount of flax or hemp strick will also be provided to practice handling long fibers. We will be using spinning wheels, and students will need to bring their personal wheels and bobbins. The student will also need a linen or cotton towel to be used as the distaff, so your wheel does not need to have one. You will be wet spinning the flax and we will reel off the linen
yarn by the end of the class day; you will be given instructions on how to finish the yarn at home. There is a materials fee to cover the cost of the flax, payable directly to the instructor by cash or check.
Level: Intermediate. The student should know how to draft fiber into smooth yarn on their own spinning wheel.
Materials fee: $15 in cash or check payable to the instructor
