Sewing with Handwoven Fabrics, a class held over 3 half days at the Rug
Cleaning Company
Dates and Times:
Session 1. Sat. April 4 from 1 pm to 4 or 5 pm after the guild meeting,
so bring your lunch
Session 2. Sat. April 11 from about 9 am to 1 pm
Session 3. Sat. June 6 from 1 pm to 4 or 5 pm after the guild meeting,
bring your lunch

Location: Blatchford Rug Cleaning Co., 7848 Silverton Ave., Suite J, San Diego
Fee: $50. Must be a member to take the class. You can pay for your membership when you register for the class below.
The students will receive instruction in pattern development for a sewn
product, plan for yardage necessary for the project and create the wearable
garment.
Before the class begins, a student wish list will be emailed to students. It
will evaluate each student's skill level and wishes for the three classes.
There will be an introductory handout for each class emailed about a week
before the class. The handout will contain a list of equipment and supplies
that are necessary for each class.
This class will be adjusted to the students' skill levels, interest, and
available resources.
Session 1 - April 4 afternoon - Sewing basics necessary to use Handwoven
fabrics. Getting ready to cut.
Pattern selection. Any pattern to be used with any fabric will find this
information necessary. It is not specifically dealing with handwovens (HW).
How is a pattern devised?
How to choose a pattern for handwoven fabric.
Use of wearing ease and how it is created.
Use a measurement chart to choose size, styles suitable.
To create design features not included in the pattern. Alterations of
neckline, Alterations for shoulder width, Alterations for bust size,
Alternations for length.
Choices for creating woven fabric. Use of color. Choice of weave structure
for that project.
How to measure necessary fabric.
Fabric combinations, thread, interfacings.
Lab: Actually practice pattern alterations.
Learn how to create missing pattern pieces.
Adjust patterns for personal use and in the design wished.
Set up weaving choices for project.
Session 2 - April 11 morning Time to BEGIN
Bring your sewing machine to practice Sewing techniques. This class will be
mostly lab time, but very directed lab. In other words, there will be
demonstrations and then practice.
Seam finishes: explore at least 6 of these and then create the samples.
Fabric movement and control techniques. stabilizing bias cuts
Pressing techniques and equipment. Create a press cloth.
RIP: How to rip successfully.
Mistake corrections.
Session 3 - June 6 afternoon Finale
The goal is to spend 3 to 4 hours sewing a simple garment. The pattern
pieces should be pinned on the fabric before coming to class.
The needs of the students will be considered in planning this class.
