Baltic Pick-up Inkle Weaving

Picture
Scheduled Dates: September 25, 2027
Instructor: Olivia Resch
Time: 10 am - 3 pm
Location: Om Center, 7951 University Avenue, La Mesa
Fee: $90 members, $100 nonmembers
Materials fee: $15 to be paid to instructor at class

Take your inkle weaving to the next level by mastering the beautiful art of Baltic pick-up! This traditional technique allows you to create striking, raised geometric designs and intricate motifs over a solid background. If you already know the basics of inkle weaving and are ready to expand your skills, this class is the perfect next step.

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to:
  • Read Baltic Patterns: Decode line-by-line charting systems to plan your designs.
  • Master Pick-Up Techniques: Manipulate specific pattern threads using your fingers or a pick-up stick to reveal hidden motifs.
  • Manage Tension & Selvages: Maintain clean, straight edges while incorporating heavier pattern yarns.
  • Fix Mistakes: Identify and reverse errors without losing your place in the pattern.

You will leave this class with a beautiful, custom-patterned band and the confidence to tackle any Baltic pick-up project on your own!

Prerequisites: Students must be comfortable warping an inkle loom independently and weaving a
basic, plain-weave band.

Equipment: You will need an Inkle loom and a belt shuttle for the workshop. If you have Texsolv heddles for your loom, feel free to bring them, but they are not required. We will be learning to make our own heddles in class. If you have a Schacht Inkle loom, look for these heddles: 220mm Texsolv Heddles (GLI-100-220/12).

Materials to Bring
• Pick-up stick or blunt tapestry needle
• Scissors and tape measure
• Yarn: Thicker yarns really pop in this style of weaving. Suitable yarns include mercerized cotton (Omega Sinfonia is a favorite!), crochet cotton, Pearle cotton (3/2, 5/2, or 10/2), and cotton rug warp. (Wool, linen, and thin yarns are not recommended for this class.)
