Two-Day Workshops
May 4-5, 2024
Natalie Drummond, "Weaving Deflected Doubleweave – Where the Shuttle Meets the Shed" Time: Saturday, 12:00-5:00; Sunday 9:00-5:00 Location: Spinners' Cottage, Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum Fee: $200 members, $225 nonmembers Day 1 Review basic Deflected Doubleweave structure and behavior after sampling. How do weavers address those wonky selvedges? Learn the basics of the “shuttle diving technique” for 4 to 8 shafts. Mixing fibers for optimal deflection and/or differential shrinkage are explored for draft(s) from the Workshop Monograph (pages 25-48). Simple treadling designs are introduced in each sample so participants can determine how the block structure of this weave can be organized to produce their own woven project - a scarf or runner with remaining warp following sampling. Explore different washing and finishing methods to determine appropriate deflection/differential shrinkage. Day 2 begins with a collaborative discussion of workshop samples prior to weaving the remaining warp. A complimentary one hour zoom session on a TBD weekday between April 8-11 at 5 pm EST will be provided to assist weavers with questions about color and understanding the drafts (pages 3-12 workshop monograph). It can be recorded by host and distributed to participants. Skill Level: Participants should be comfortable with reading drafts, warping a loom with multiple warps and weaving with 2 or 3 shuttles. Weavers must set up their 4-8 shaft loom in advance of the workshop (4 or 8 shaft). It is considered an intermediate weave using 2-3 shuttles. |
Materials students should provide: Participants will purchase the pdf from the instructor by April 4, supply their warp and weft yarns of 5/2 and/or 8/2 Tencel and/or cotton of 4.5 yards in length. Additional fibers recommended for fiber mixing would include 20/2 tussah silk. Participants will use at least one dyed warp.
Materials Instructor will provide: The $30 materials fee (paid by student directly to the instructor by April 4, 2024) includes the Digital Download of Deflected Doubleweave Workshop Monograph (wif file variations) and some sample weft yarns (sample 3). All workshop materials will be released via Dropbox or as a pdf from instructor’s website. Digital content is non refundable. WORKSHOP IS FULL

Date: TBD
Four-Shaft Twill Sampler Time: 9:30-4:30 Location: San Rafael Parish, ground level Room A-B San Diego 92128 Fee: $140 members, $160 non-members This weekend Twill workshop is based on Janet Phillips’ book Designing Woven Fabrics. You will need your own copy, either borrowed, or purchased (about $50). We will use the first 40 pages of her book (Section 1) this weekend. We will use the first 9 threadings, and weave them using 50 different treadling combinations. The sample blanket has 450 different squares. It measures about 20 inches wide and about 90 inches long. Level: Intermediate: You know how to warp your loom (if you need a Warping Refresher, see the October 14 workshop), and how to read a draft. This workshop would be excellent for beginning weavers who want to try something new, but also for advanced weavers who want to get into design. Loom: You will need to bring a warped 4-shaft table or floor loom, 21 inch weaving width or wider, a 10 dent per inch reed, 420 heddles. We can adapt if you have a narrower loom. I will provide the warping instructions when you register – allow enough time to wind a 5 yard or longer warp and thread your loom. You can do this with us on October 14 or at home. Yarn: You will need at least ¾ lb of natural or white 8/2 cotton yarn, up to ½ lb of any medium value color to divide the squares (I used turquoise dividers in the warp and yellow in the weft) and about ¾ lb of a dark weft color: navy blue, dark green, grey etc. You will want a strong contrast between the natural or white warp color, and this dark weft color. |
