Classroom Demonstrations

Our members provide overviews and in-depth explanations on weaving, spinning, braiding, and related fiber arts techniques.  We have given talks to such varied school groups as kindergartners, fifth graders for “Colonial Days” workshops, and college-level students.  Demonstrations are tailored to the age and experience of the participants, the historical context of the event, and level of technical detail needed.

Scout troops, 4H groups, and other youth service organizations can also benefit from our presentations, especially as an adjunct to animal husbandry (think wool from sheep), home economics, or textile art (sewing, knitting) projects.

Community Events:

Guild members participate in a number of local festivals, historical presentations, and other special events, including:

- San Diego County Fair: each year the Guild hosts a booth at this 3-week long fair, providing demonstrations in weaving, spinning, braiding and a variety of other fiber crafts.

- Old Town: Cinco de Mayo Hispanic heritage fair, Ladies’ Day at Old Town historical craft and fashion show including period costumes, and other one-day events performed either in festive dress or period attire.

- Union Bank Fallback Festival: a wild-west themed children’s educational fair located in the Gaslamp District downtown.  Our members have participated for the past four years, and give close-up and hands-on experience to youngsters using simple fiber arts techniques.

- Water Conservation Garden: Occasional informal get-togethers at this picturesque spot at Cuyamaca College allow our members to highlight their skills for passersby.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Demonstrations are one of the most rewarding aspects of guild membership.  The public generally has little knowledge of how yarn and cloth are made; even our beginners find that they can teach their new skills to enthused and interested people.  Our members gain valuable experience in various venues of public speaking, and our crafts are truly appreciated.

Contact the guild if you would like to arrange for a demonstration.
